 Housing Resources of Western Colorado (HRWC) promotes the wise and sustainable use of resources by offering education and awareness programs, opportunities for community revitalization, weatherization programs, rehabilitation programs, and wood stove replacement for cleaner air alternatives.

 HRWC provides decent, safe, energy-efficient and affordable housing for individuals and families with low to moderate incomes.

HRWC is a member of the NeighborWorks America network of more than 240 community development organizations working in more than 4,400 urban, suburban, and rural communities across America.

HRWC received one of seven grants awarded in the nation--$30,000 to be applied to 39 single family homes.

The NeighborWorks-Home Depot Foundation Green Building Grant will be used in the Colony Meadows Self-Help project to upgrade from 2X4 framing to 2X6 framing and integrate cellulose insulation, a recycled paper product with excellent thermal performance characteristics.

Families participating in a Self-Help project perform a significant portion (a minimum of 30 hours per week) of the construction labor on each other’s homes under qualified supervision. The savings (approximately $15,000 per home) from the reduction in labor costs associated with 2 x 6 framing and cellulose insulation, allows otherwise ineligible families to own their homes.

Approximately 12,000 cubic feet of newspaper won’t end up in a landfill because it has been recycled into cellulose insulation for homes in the Colony Meadows Self-Help housing project.

We project energy savings of $100 per year per household, and $3,900 per year for the total project. In less than 8 years, Home Depot’s $30,000 initial investment in the project will have been saved. These monies will boost our local economy.
